The Real Benefits Of Extra Homework: An Expert’s View

I know what you’re thinking. Ha, benefits to having extra homework? Yeah, right. But guess what? Maybe you should take a second look at that opinion. Because as it turns out, there are plenty of benefits to having extra homework. Don’t believe me? Check out the list below:

  • No, you won’t see all of the benefits right now. Again, I know what you’re thinking: But I want benefits that I can see now. And that’s understandable. But guess what – you know all of that extra stuff you’re learning that’s such a pain in the neck right now? As it turns out, a lot – and I do mean a lot – of that stuff is also a foundation for some really cool stuff that you’ll learn further on down the line. And you’re getting the short track to all of this awesome knowledge. You don’t have to take the long road of making the discoveries and sometimes being persecuted for it. It’s just being handed to you. Think about what that means for a minute and appreciate it.

  • Reinforcement. Remember how I said up there that a lot of the seemingly useless stuff that you’re learning now will be a foundation for stuff that you’ll learn later on down the line? Well, if you’ve forgotten it, you’re going to have to relearn in. And trust me that is a very long and tedious pain in the neck, on top of being almost impossibly stressful. That’s where reinforcement and your extra homework comes in. The more you do something –and I don’t care what that something is, it could be tuba or calculus or long distance running – the more you do it, the better you get at it. And perhaps more importantly, the longer it takes you to forget it.

  • Building neural pathways. Think you’re not smart enough for all this? Think again. Each time you do a new thing, your brain is constructing new neural pathways and, yes, making you just a little bit smarter each time. The more you use those pathways, the more they are reinforced. Whether it’s driving to your friend’s new house for the first few times and remembering all the streets or doing extra homework, you are building new neural pathways in your brain.

Believe it or not, there ARE real benefits to extra homework. So don’t give up. There are definite benefits to what you are doing right now. Even if it doesn’t seem like it now, in the future you will be glad that you put in the effort.
